Part-Time Youth Settlement/Employment Counsellor for the Youth Immigrant
Settlement Adaptation Program (ISAP)

YWCA Join, Unify, Motivate and Participate (JUMP) Scarborough

YWCA JUMP Scarborough is a new youth-centred settlement program with an
employment focus which targets new, immigrant, female youth in
Scarborough who are between the ages of 13 to 24 and are within their
first year of arrival. The program addresses the adaptation, settlement
and integration needs of female youth through a comprehensive,
settlement centre model, including: a welcome centre (settlement
information, translation assistance and referrals); satellite workshops;
settlement series workshops; case management; employment related
services; community building.

Reporting to the Manager of Employment Programs (YWCA JUMP Scarborough
and Essential Skills for Employment Program), the Part-Time Youth
Settlement/Employment Counsellor for Youth ISAP is responsible for
working with young newcomer women to establish a plan to move towards
economic independence by providing pre-employment services which
includes development, implementation and evaluation of pre-employment
workshops and programs.

You will have: in-depth knowledge of an academic or technical discipline
normally acquired through completion of an undergraduate degree in
Social Work, Psychology or Adult Education; work involves application of
theoretical knowledge to job-related problems; 3 to 5 years experience
in employment counselling and group work specifically with young
newcomer women and low-income women or disadvantaged groups; specialized
training and experience in vocational assessment and interpretation;
ability to interpret and administer Level B testing; Life Skills Coach
training certificate an asset; demonstrated experience in the
development, delivery and evaluation of workshops and groups;
counselling approach that is flexible, de-escalates tension, teaches
conflict resolution and is focused on success; ability to work within an
anti-oppression and feminist framework; ability to deliver culturally
sensitive services in a multicultural environment; knowledge and
understanding of trauma, mental health issues, advocacy and/or substance
abuse issues an asset; demonstrated ability to work under pressure;
demonstrated ability to work and co-operate in a team; ability to handle
crisis situations effectively both in person and by telephone; strong
interpersonal skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills;
proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, e-mail and the Internet;
ability to maintain a positive approach and a professional manner at all
times; knowledge of a second language an asset (e.g. Somali, Tamil,
Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Mandarin). Core Competencies: engage in a self
reflective and collaborative practice that is non-judgemental and
compassionate and reflects the mission of YWCA Toronto; incorporate
principles of anti-oppression and equity in responding to the service
needs of women and children and work toward removing systemic barriers
to independence and wellbeing; demonstrate respect, consideration and
acceptance of the opinions of others while expressing her own expertise
and effectively utilizing relevant resources and specialists;
consistently collaborate with team members, sharing ideas and
differences openly; be receptive to new ideas and adapt to change as
necessary; value the contribution of others and take action to
strengthen partnerships and support others to achieve effective
outcomes; take action to avoid or solve problems and create
opportunities for positive change; demonstrate commitment to ongoing
personal and professional development.

The hours of work for this position is 17.5 hours per week (some evening
and weekend work may be required). The salary for this position is
$43,247 per annum (prorated to $21,624 per annum for this 17.5 hour per
week position) (Level 5), plus comprehensive benefits.

candidate prior to hiring. YWCA is a unionized workplace. Staff are
represented by CUPE Local 2189. This position is within the Bargaining
Unit. For internal applicants, this position is not secondable.
